How Accredited Is University Of Phoenix When Compared To A State College For A Masters Degree?
I want to go back to school and get my Masters degree. Online would be easiest due to working full time…but I am concerned with what the perceptions of quality is in the business world when contrasted against a Masters obtained at a State University.
It isn’t a question of accreditation. it is a question of quality and the perception of quality.
University of Phoenix is accredited — but it is not selective and it is not good. They were recently fined a record $9.8MM for sleazy recruiting practices. I’ve read that they are currently under investigation for padding their placement numbers. They accept nearly anyone who applies — so employers do not trust that their graduates know anything. Companies like Intel have decided not to pay for their employees to take classes there because they lack rigor.
In addition, it is a For Profit corporation — so not only is it not as respected as a state school — but it is much more expensive. In my opinion, you would do better to get a tattoo on your forehead that says “I have a bad education.” It would be equally effective and a lot cheaper.
U of Phoenix and other online universities are good only if you want to move up the corporate ladder internally.
However, degrees from these universities will be of little help when seeking new employment or seeking teaching positions in other universities.
